Intercultural Center Monthly Events
Hispanic/Latinx/Latine Heritage Month
This month we recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated from September 15 to October 15, to recognize the histories, cultures and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This period also signifies the anniversary of independence for various Latin American countries.
This observance started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson after representative George Edward Brown of California proposed the bill. The week was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
College of the Canyons prides itself on being designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) for 10 years! This federal designation is given to institutions with at least a 25% Hispanic enrollment with the purpose of expanding opportunities and makes institutions eligible for federal grants. There are over 600 federally designated HSIs across the nation, and California has the highest number with over 170 HSIs.
This is a time to honor and celebrate the rich histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. During this month we embrace the traditions that bring people together through music, food, art, and much more. As we commence this month, the Intercultural Center reflects on the importance of providing space to foster these traditions but also a safe space to explore and build stronger connections for all students.
