Introduction

Children chasing bubbles

Studying tort Law gives us many opportunities to explore how our legal system manages the almost endless possibilities for injury in our country between people, their property, and businesses.

Our coursework will focus on the core areas of tort law, intentional torts, negligence, strict liability, and the seemingly infinite varieties.  I, like you, will draw upon the events I have experienced, personally and professionally, to enrich our learning experience.

Your participation and creativity will give our experience that superior edge.

Course Description

We will explore what torts are, how they differ from one another, how our legal system determines whether one has occurred, whether the bad actor's actions are excusable for any one of a variety of reasons, whether the victim's actions led to the injuries and if, when and what type of remedies may be ordered among the parties.

What to Expect in this Course

This course combines weekly asynchronous activities, discussions, assignments, quizzes, and exams.  Most of our written work and interaction will occur in the Canvas Learning Management System.

All assignments shall be uploaded into each student's assignment area for the module in which the assignment is due (by clicking on the submit button) and grades will be available online. There will be weekly, virtual office hours and meetings by appointment.  Students are encouraged to reach out at any time to the Professor and each other.  We learn best when we learn together.

More detailed information will be available in the Canvas course shell once this course begins.

Types of Assessments

Our learning environment will consist of PowerPoint presentations, numerous online collaborative discussions, activities, and assignments in which we shall learn from and educate each other.

We shall assess our mastery by analyzing hypothetical case problems, exams, quizzes, and independent exploration and analysis of key legal concepts in tort law.
