Introduction
Hello students, I am Julie Nguyen, your professor this coming spring. Any questions, feel free to email me at Julie.nguyen@canyons.edu, or visit my office hours (OH) on Monday and Wednesday (M/W 8:00am to 9:00am) starting February 10th via Canvas Zoom Link. If necessary, you can request a special OH with me by sending me an email request or post it on Canvas Discussion.
Note that there will be a mandatory meeting on M & W during the first week to meet and greet, but most importantly is to go over the course outline, expectations, and administrative issues. After the first week mandatory meeting, the same M & W (8-9am) live OH will be used to do synchronous lectures and answering any questions from the weekly course chapters. Although students are not required to log-in but are strongly encouraged and welcomed to synchronously join online via Canvas/Zoom. The lectures during my live OH will not be recorded nor posted on Canvas. All chapter lecture material via ppt/notes/and short videos are available on Canvas Modules. All eBook reading materials and several simulated assignments are available on McGraw Hill platform via student link to McGraw Hill when you have completed the purchasing eBook from McGraw Hill Publisher (Refer to below video link on how to purchase the mandatory course eBook from McGraw Hill).

Course Description
Course Description:
This class teaches the principles of human genetics and the function of DNA; genes, chromosomes and patterns of inheritance are explored. Not designed for biological science majors.
BIO 140 Student Learning Outcome (SLO):
Analyze the structure, function, and mutation of genes and chromosomes, as well as determine patterns of inheritance for genetic traits.
Class Set Up:
This class is being taught in a 100% online format and is structured to have weekly assignments and due dates (see the schedule below for full details).

What to Expect in this Course
What to Expect:
- In order to do well in this course, you are required to read all assigned reading materials and genetics homework assignments. All text chapter reading materials via ppts, lecture study guides, and/or videos will be made available on Canvas.
- Students can access the course content at the starting date, February 10th at 8:00am.
- All learning materials, syllabus, lectures, outlines, assignments, chapter quizzes, and three non-cumulative exams will be posted on Canvas. |
- Students will be asked to complete ALL assignments, quizzes, and exams within the specific dates posted on the Canvas platform (also on Syllabus).
- Since this is a 100% online class, there will be no make-up exams – no exceptions. The exams, quizzes, and assignments are opened for the duration of a posted due date window. You need to manage your time/date schedule to complete the assigned course tasks accordingly.
In the event of a medical emergency due to severe illness, hospitalization, family emergency (i.e., death of a family member), or an extreme hardship, signed official documentation (i.e., physician’s report, hospital receipt, or death certificate) will be required as evidence to be considered for an extended date of taking the make-up exam or quizzes. - Students who fail to complete the first Module 1 assignments during the first week of class will be dropped from the course.
- Students are required to enter and must complete the “Introduce yourself discussion” on the Canvas Discussion Board during the first week of class - failure to comply with these mandatory requirements will result in an automatic drop from the course roster in order to accept students on the waiting list.

- Students will submit all the required course assignments and exams via Canvas at the indicated due date and time to receive proper credit.

Types of Assessments
Assessments:
- There are 6 modules: Concept activities, discussion, reflection, learning, and reading materials are provided weekly
- Testing Assessment includes:
First week student introduction on Zoom/Canvas (20 pts)
6 non-cumulative exams, from each module (100 pts each, 600pts total)
8 concept activities via McGraw Hills Connect Web Page (15 pts each, 120pts total)
End of semester self-refection (60 pts)
Students must score 70% or higher on each exam and assignment to pass the course

Associate degree Information:
Recent California Legislation guarantees admission to a California State University (CSU) campus for any community college student who completes an “associate degree for transfer”. The Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) in Math, Physics, Computer Science, and Geology, or the Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) in Geography, is intended for College of the Canyons students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students must earn a C or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. The College also offers associate degrees in Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, and Math.
