Introduction
Hello! My name is Megan Janzen and I am your instructor for the ARCHT-110 / ID-110 Architectural Drafting course.
Hand drafting is one of my passions and an art form that is just as valid today as it was before the innovations of CAD and 3-D virtual modeling. In learning the art of drafting you gain the ability to effectively communicate with your clients and construction team alike in order to make ideas into livable spaces.
With a background in Interior Design, Art and Entertainment; I have enjoyed of exploring the world of design along many creative avenues. Community colleges like COC have so much to offer students as they start out in pursuit of their future careers and I am truly looking forward to working with you this semester.
Course Description
This course provides the student with information concerning current practices in architectural drafting and construction technology sufficient for the student to produce a set of working drawings for a small single-family residence. Drafting techniques will emphasize clarity, line weight expression, and accuracy.
What to Expect in this Course
This course involves manual drafting, using pencils and paper. Assignments will introduce tools of the trade along with sketching and lettering techniques followed by a drafted set of working drawings for a single-story wood frame residence. These assignments will incorporate current drafting techniques, applying appropriate terminology on call-outs and notes, and submitting the set of drawings in the correct order according to industry standards.
This class will require an average of 9-10 hours per week and will include lecture videos, lab time to work on assignments, regular assessments and homework. Some students work more quickly than others so please allow sufficient time to stay on top of all assignments according to your own processing and production habits. There will be in-class desk critiques to encourage collaboration and review techniques. Homework will include online videos, reading materials, discussion boards, quizzes as well as completion of assignments with submissions through canvas.
The Fall 2025 semester will be offered in a Hybrid / HyFlex format. On the first scheduled date of our course please log into Canvas as early as possible by visiting to preview course materials. Prerecorded lectures will be available through Canvas and must be viewed before each corresponding lab meeting so that students will have the information necessary to participate in live class meetings, properly manage their workflow and complete assignments on time. The HyFlex lab portion of this class will consist of synchronous scheduled meeting times held on campus in a classroom and students are welcomed to join in-person (face to face) or via Zoom depending on their preference.
Students joining in-person are invited to use classroom tools during lab time, will receive assignment handouts and often benefit from interacting with other students in the classroom. Students joining via Zoom will need to log on through a computer with a webcam and reliable internet connection through the Canvas course page Zoom link and be able to generate their own printouts before each class. Students joining via Zoom will also be expected to arrange a workspace where they can use their own tools and materials to work on large format drawing assignments and actively participate in class interactions throughout the entire class meeting time without interruption. My goal is for all students to get the most from our scheduled meeting times and benefit from interactions with myself and their fellow students.
Any students who are absent during the first class meeting will be dropped to allow waitlist students to be added.
Types of Assessments
Student assessment will be based on online discussion boards, quizzes, drafting related assignments and class participation.
