How to Avoid and Fix Known Canvas Gradebook Issue
If you use the in the Canvas Gradebook to automatically grade late or missing assignments, and you have imported content from a past Canvas course, please be aware of an issue in Canvas that may cause all of your students' assignments to be marked as 0 in the Gradebook.
This page will explain:
- why this problem occurs
- how to remove the automatic grades if this has happened in one of your courses, and
- how to prevent the problem if you have not yet imported content into your new course shell.
What is the problem, and how does it happen?
Faculty have reported instances where Canvas will automatically score all assignments as 0 based on the due dates imported from the previous course. Once this happens, the scores will remain even if the due dates are adjusted.
This issue occurs when:
- The settings to apply grades automatically for missing or late submissions are turned on in the Gradebook, AND
- Assignments with due dates in the past are copied into the course.
How can I resolve this issue if it happens in my course?
If this has happened in your course, follow the following steps to remove the 0 scores for each impacted assignment:
- In the Gradebook, select the options menu next to the assignment name and select "set default grade".
- Leave the default grade blank, select the "Overwrite already-entered grades" checkbox, and then click "Set Default Grade" to save.
- Repeat for each assignment column as needed.
How can I prevent this issue from occurring?
If you have not yet imported content into your new shells, you can prevent this issue by doing the following:- Turn off any missing/late submission policies in your new course Gradebook before importing content.
- When importing from one Canvas course to another, (not All Content).
- When Selecting Specific Content to include in the course import, do not copy Course Settings if you used the missing/late submission policies in your past course.
- Select when importing content so old due dates are not transferred into your new course.
